Philippopolis Tavern Restaurant Review: Chef Zhivko "Jay" Yovchev is Bulgarian born, and his cooking at Philippopolis Tavern hews close to home, while drawing inspiration from the love of good food that he learned at his grandmother's knee. He makes just about everything on site, including the sausages; one exception is the red pepper coulis that pairs so well with them. The composition salad plate includes a Russian salad with mayonnaise binding an assortment of vegetables --- we confess to finding it addictive. Potato salad brings to the table a large plate of warm potato chunks that you sprinkle with oil and vinegar, a rustic, appealing dish. Pizza, too, is featured, and you'll find a seafood pie, among others. For dessert, get the Philippopolis cake, a dense chocolate cake that substitutes ground nuts for flour. The wine list includes a few selections from Bulgaria. |
