One of Kitayama's best features is the immaculately landscaped Asian garden, which sits just outside the tall glass walls. Indoors is a place of calm as well, with traditional Japanese flower arrangements, blonde woods and flowing silks. Newport's business elite shows up for the bento box lunch, while well-heeled families come for the dinner scene. Some know better and reserve a table in the main dining room. Others deal with the first-come, first-served order of operations at the sushi bar, which offers beautifully presented sushi and sashimi. Cooked entrées arrive in a parade of platters, bowls, baskets and bento boxes. Sukiyaki and shabu-shabu are also available, as is a serviceable prix-fixe menu highlighting various multi-course options. The full bar whips up a few Asian-inspired cocktails and pours craft beer.
