Of all the big-ticket spots in Oakland's burgeoning Uptown, this stylish Southern restaurant most closely matches the nearby Paramount Theatre's grand spirit and scale. Fried tomatoes, oysters, chicken livers ("Southern foie gras") and buttermilk fried chicken --- bright, satisfying and miraculously greaseless --- are just a few of the dishes that have emerged from the kitchen. Meyer Ranch beef meatloaf seems improvident until tasted, smooth and sweetly glazed, topped with fresh tomatoes and cucumbers and bearing just a hint of smoke. With the exception of one side dish of too-salty mashed potatoes, seasoning is spot-on, with Cajun and Creole-influenced slivers and flakes of heat where appropriate. Single-batch bourbons and bourbon-based cocktails are treats, as are the Southern-style desserts, including a banana pudding parfait. The annual summer "Peach Week" features such adventures as chilled peach buttermilk soup and cured duck sliders with pickled peaches. Groups might also enjoy the bar and lounge, or the more private velvet-outfitted "Bourbon Room."
