Pitfire taps into L.A.’s hunger for good pizza, cooked over a hardwood-fired barbecue pit. The resulting pies, with some charring around the edges, have proven to keep up with many of L.A.’s better artisan pizzerias. Some toppings for the pizzas are also grilled, creating layers of smoky flavor. Ingredients like burrata, fennel sausage, merguez sausage and wild mushrooms are abundant, and seasonal specialties ensure the kind of market-driven sensibilities not usually discovered in a pizza joint. You’ll find a variety of good pastas, too, as well as starters like chicken meatballs and Tuscan bean soup. For dessert, grab an oversize chocolate chunk cookie or some organic soft-serve ice cream from cult-favorite Straus Family Creamery.
