Plan Check Kitchen + Bar Restaurant Review

: Plan Check is an industrial-inspired space with a handful of booths, communal tables and a few bar stools available inside, while outside a large patio has twice the amount of seating. With an owner who was previously the executive chef of Umami Burger, it’s no surprise that the focus at Plan Check is innovative hamburgers. The PCB, an Akaushi red Wagyu beef burger topped with American cheese and treated with dashi, schmaltz onions and mixed pickles, is also layered with a creative condiment known as ketchup leather. Like a fruit roll-up, it is both sweet and acidic, and slowly disintegrates into the beef patty. The chef’s favorite burger is loaded with extra cheese, chewy chunks of bacon and a sunny side up egg, resulting in a very filling dish. Small plates like smoky fried chicken and a short rib pot roast offer interesting variations on country comfort cuisine. Be sure to order sweet potato fries. Desserts are few, with options like cruller donuts and ice cream bars in a variety of flavors. Though the wine list is small, a handful of craft beers and a surprising number of Japanese whiskeys are available. Also located at 351 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles, 310-288-6500.
