THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Planet Wayside Restaurant Review:
Planet Wayside is a pleasant surprise. Cooked for and owned by Tim ONeil, this whimsical little place looks like a ramshackle tool shed, but its a foodie destination. Looking for all the world like a Berkeley flower child (no chefs garb here), ONeil cooks a variety of treats. Take the Chili Pluto, a fiery, cheese-drenched, onion-garnished bowl of beans that we loved. From there, move on to the ribs with the best barbecue sauce this side of Tennessee, or maybe the Monte Cristo sandwich with smoked chicken, bacon and Swiss on batter-dipped French bread. Salad greens usually come fresh-picked from the garden in-season. For dessert, try the marionberry cobbler, which is luscious, or the Key lime sugar cookie torte. Even the coffee is a surprise: strong, with overtones of cinnamon.
