Located on the grounds of The Westin La Paloma Resort & Spa, Poppy Kitchen offers diners fun takes on all-American fare. Mussels are always on the menu in some form under the “Starts” section. Order them with the Kitchen Salad, an ever-changing mix of fresh greens, vegetables and fruit and you have yourself a nice, light meal. For something more substantial, head toward the “Mains” where you’ll find Luis pasta, another dish built on the whim of the chef (note that the pasta is always house-made). Whether you go for surf or turf you won’t be disappointed. Seafood gumbo is loaded with crayfish, shrimp, andouille sausage, chicken and white rice and a brown roux. The house specialty duck breast comes with duck confit fried rice, a mushroom minty broth and peas dressed with garlic. Don’t pass up chef Ginny Wooters’ made-to-order carrot cake. It’s served in a mini cast iron pan and topped with cinnamon ice cream that melts slowly from the heat of the cake. Cocktails shine with originality and the wines come from smaller craft wineries. Views from the patio are beautiful.
