| Cued in by its name, patrons might guess that this Arlington eatery---taking over from an Egyptian restaurant---offers Italian fare, but theyd be wrong, as Portabellos dubs itself a casual American eatery. And that it is. It has also obviously struck a harmonious note, for this has become a neighborhood hotspot, with every table packed and more lined up outside. Befitting its casual décor, the equally casual menu stars several all-American classics, from an American burger with cheese and smoked bacon to the ubiquitous blackened chicken Caesar salad. For a change of pace, chef Bill Hamrock starts you off with a soup of the day (avoid the anemic chicken tortilla version with very little flavor) or fried calamari, which seemed to be a big hit. Main course dishes include two different pizzas, grilled chicken paillard, pan-seared sea scallops and a skimpy vegetarian offering of balsamic glazed portabello mushrooms. While not every dish makes the grade, Hamrock offers enough to satisfy picky eaters. |
