Leslie Rudd is well known in wine country, not only as a winery owner and philanthropist, but also for purchasing the epicurean mecca Dean & DeLuca. Situated along Napa Valley's main thoroughfare and adjacent to his gourmet grocery store is Press, a farmhouse-style building with vaulted ceilings and lean, modern furnishings. There's a palpable upscale air which extends to the tantalizing aromas wafting from kitchen and tabletops, a giddying mix of grilled meats and melting truffle butter. Press touts specialized ingredients from all over the country including Pennsylvania Dutch milk-fed veal, Berkridge Farms Heritage Pork from Iowa, or Maine-caught Jonah crab, all prepared in a custom wood-burning oven or rotisserie. It's a place for both haughty cult wine favorites and small-production, up-and-coming producers. Some entrées may induce sticker shock, as with the $98, 28-ounce Australian Wagyu; even slumming it with the eight-ounce Idaho version sets diners back $42. Sea-foodies are welcome here, with a raw bar of oysters, shrimp and lobster cocktails and a $90 platter with the works. Guests are encouraged to share the Flintstones portioned beef offerings as well as hefty sides of everything one expects, from creamed spinach to truffle mac ‘n’ cheese.
