Primanti Brothers Restaurant Review: Primanti Brothers is a must-make pilgrimage for residents and visitors alike. Opened in the '30s as a late-night food trough and watering hole for produce dock workers in the Strip District, today it's a Pittsburgh institution---even though the owners have chained the concept. This Oakland shop is well located for the academic masses, and the bar here sells only beer. And the same sandwich stars: meat, oozing cheese, tomatoes, coleslaw and french fries stuffed between two slices of crusty Italian bread. Some complain that the chaining of the Primanti sandwich has shrunk the amount of meat delivered. But the greasy, tangy, salty and crunchy icon still has multi-generational appeal and a reputation that attracts visiting celebrities. |
