| This Carroll Gardens eatery has such satisfying comfort food that it could turn you into a serious regular. We counsel you, however, to come early and enjoy a fine German beer or local Sixpoint Craft ale even before your taste buds kick into action. Start with the restaurant’s signature weisswurst, the traditional German sausage, here made with a combination of veal, perfect for coating with sweet mustard. A lightly dressed celery salad with celeriac, radish and parsley is a nice palate cleanser. Beef sauerbraten, served with braised red cabbage, juniper berries and pretzel dumplings, could rival its brethren back in Germany; it’s cooked until tender without the cloying dollop of sauce that you find in most German eateries. Herb and wild mushroom spätzle makes for a good sharable side dish. Leave room for the locavore cheese plate, offered in three sizes. Cocktails are creative throwbacks to Prohibition days, with flavored bitters and fruit mashes. The wine list has a nice selection of whites and roses from Germany as well as other parts of Europe as well as the U.S.; reds are mainly from France, Spain and the U.S. |
