 THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Proper, A Gastro Pub Restaurant Review: Proper, A Gastro Pub gives the traditional British pub experience a nice culinary twist. Proper boasts myriad settings, from an intimate room with big booths to an energetic bar scene, and an alfresco upper deck proffering views of Petco Park. Chef Sean Magee helms the kitchen and brings a savvy knowledge of British pub fare and French technique to the party, thus creating some memorable bites. The house burger (juicy sirloin or braised lamb) towers with crispy onions, tomato chutney and white cheddar. The shepherd’s pie reflects Magee's gastrofare vision as diced root vegetables and nuggets of braised lamb in a Zinfandel lamb reduction await under a golden brown parsnip celery root mash. Mussels float in Guinness with Spanish chorizo and his Black and Tan appears as mac ‘n’ cheese in Harp lager and Guinness stout with smoked cheddar, Gruyère, lardons and caramelized onion. Grab a bottle of wine next door or try the resident mixologist’s deconstructed Pimms Cup. |
