Proper Restaurant Review: The restaurant scene in downtown Tucson is booming, thanks in part to restaurants like Proper, a sleek dining space set on one of the busiest corners in the area. Food is served for breakfast and lunch, as well as dinner, but don’t expect the ordinary stuff. Curried lamb stew is paired with creamy polenta and a poached egg. There’s the banh mi stuffed with a luscious pork belly and brightly pickled vegetables, and a Caesar made with escarole, capers, shrimp and lemon croutons. Dinner draws crowds who feast on the pan-seared duck breast or the house Criollo burger topped with bacon aïoli, house-made mustard and local cheese. Of course, if you’re just in the mood for something small, plenty of choices are at your disposal, including shrimp and grits. A big attraction is the cocktail menu; one specialty, the Back Porch, is made with black tea-infused vodka, which is like iced tea for grown-ups.
