Dining room at Real Tenochtitlan, Chicago, ILWhile the name of this Logan Square restaurant won’t necessarily roll off your tongue, the name of its executive chef should. Geno Bahena first arrived on the Chicago dining scene back in the late ’80s, working in the kitchen of Mex-master Rick Bayless. Since then, Bahena has been the man behind Chilpancingo and Ixcapuzalco (yeah, you could say he likes tongue twisters). At this spot, he’s getting back to his roots putting the spotlight on his wonderful moles, as well as a varied selection of south-of-the-border specialties. Start with the flavorful guacamole, made tableside, or the earthy sopa azteca with chicken, chile pasilla and house-made sour cream. Go exotic with entrées like grilled local ostrich in ancho-nut mole, or stick with more familiar sounding carne asada. The beautifully decorated room and attentive service isn’t reflected in the reasonable prices. Save even more with its BYOB policy.
