Recess Restaurant Review

: Recess is an upscale café and gourmet marketplace in Glendale, owned by former Patina Group chef Sevan Azarian-Abdessian. Breakfast dishes include an array of eggs Benedict variations --- Canadian bacon, prosciutto, crab cakes, gravlox or lobster --- bathed in lemon-thyme hollandaise, plus fruit-topped buttermilk waffles and a well-stuffed burrito. Generous salads, burgers and panini are offered at lunch, while selections for dinner tend to be sophisticated takes on comfortable classics. Consider steak frites, a rich and retro beef Stroganoff, an eight-ounce Kobe burger with caramelized onions and fig jam aïoli, and a seasonal vegan cassoulet. Despite the casual, homey surroundings, prix-fixe menus are available, and dishes are stylishly presented. For dessert, nostalgic offerings include Boston cream pie and carrot cake. A moderately priced wine list provides eclectic options. Greeting guests in the café area is wicker furniture and a white marble espresso bar displaying pastries and gourmet products. The adjoining full-service dining room has polished wood tables, sleek mirrors and a pair of wrought-iron chandeliers.
