Dining room at Recess, Indianapolis, INChef-owner Greg Hardesty calls his small venue his culinary playground, and for good reason. It has a casual neighborhood vibe with diner-style metal tables, jeans-clad servers and a prix-fixe menu that's enough to excite the sophisticated palate. Each day’s three- or four-course menu offers a starter, choice of two entrées, often a salad, and always a dessert. This combo may not appear together again, but we hope the chef repeats the seared scallops with sunchokes, haricots verts and roasted tomatoes. Or the imaginative and well executed oysters Rockefeller bisque that arrives with a fried oyster atop a spinach-flavored, bacon-kissed bowl of goodness. The chocolate bread pudding is worth ordering an extra serving to-go. Service is on-point and knowledgeable, including when it comes to selecting wine for each course. Although the list is limited and changes often, Hardesty succeeds in having an appropriate match on hand.
