Red Gravy, Brooklyn, NY

Red Gravy Restaurant Review

: Red Gravy may be located on bustling Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, but step inside and it’s Italian rustic all the way. Exposed brick walls give way to wooden ceiling beams. There’s a long bar at the front and a sedate dining room in back. Saul Bolton, the chef/owner of Saul and The Vanderbilt, has created a menu of classic Italian dishes that are, for the most part, well executed --- though, be warned, the portions are small. Arancini are done right, with a gooey smoked mozzarella core, and juicy meatballs wade in a creamy polenta. Red Gravy gives a slight nod to the world beyond Italy by serving thick bucatini with sea urchin, chili and basil to tasty effect. For heartier fare, try the juicy Berkshire pork chop. Just be sure to save room for the coconut-laced cheesecake. The wine list, naturally, is heavy on Italian labels with a number of bottles in the $30 range.
