Red Hook Tavern Restaurant Review:

About the restaurant & décor: Red Hook Tavern is the pub/restaurant/steakhouse from Billy Durney, the owner of the barbecue destination Hometown Bar-B-Que just a few blocks away. The clubby space channels old-school New York, with echoes of Peter Luger and Corner Bistro — there’s a long white-oak bar, pressed tin, and exposed brick walls lined with empty wine bottles.

Likes: Red Hook Tavern Burger; New York strip steak; funky wine list; buzzy vibe.
Dislikes: Roasted corn with radicchio; can be hard to get a table.

Food & Drinks: The Red Hook Tavern Burger is the big star here. The thick patty of dry-aged, juicy beef is blanketed with melted cheese and topped simply with a slice of onion. Served on a buttered roll with sesame seeds beside fat wedge fries, the burger is worthy of its hype. But it’s not the only solid beef choice; a slightly charred bone-in New York strip steak, paired with a small cast-iron skillet full of creamed spinach, is a lesson in simplicity executed impeccably. Work your way up to the meat with country-ham-and-cheddar croquettes with whole-grain Dijonnaise, or sweet little neck clams in an intensely garlicky broth. But skip lackluster roasted corn served with radicchio cups. End your meal with a no-holds-barred sundae of fior di latte gelato, chocolate fudge sauce and candied pecans. The wine list features a number of grower Champagnes and natural bottles by small, eclectic producers, and several Brooklyn beers are on tap.
