| This neighborhood restaurant and longtime politico hangout stakes its reputation on the Creole- and Cajun-inspired dishes that shape its menu. Steaks presented with the typical sauces are joined by uninventive side dishes, but lunch may yield a delightfully seasoned, thick and hearty corn-and-crab bisque. An evening standout is the jalapeƱo pepper-glazed porterhouse pork chop. Stuffed mirliton, the mild green vegetable sometimes called chayote, comes fried crisp on the outside but smooth as custard inside, and topped with a few of New Orleanians' favorite things: shrimp, crab meat, fried oysters and andouille sausage, all tossed in garlicky butter. In fact, the best dishes on this menu are those that are iconic to the city, such as crabmeat au gratin and seafood-stuffed catfish. Desserts feature all the usual local suspects: bread pudding and chocolate cake among them. More attention could be paid to developing the wine list, although there is a nice reserve section, and an above-average number of half bottle offerings. |
