THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Red Star Tavern's dining room and bar area adjoining the boutique Hotel Monaco underwent a major renovation. The menu got a reboot as well, and offers robust versions of hearty American classics in small and large plate sizes. Start with appetizers such as roasted pumpkin soup, warm squash salad with cauliflower and radish, or curried mussels with preserved lemon. Large plates range from hearty meats like an apple cider-brined pork chop to a tavern burger and a vegetarian sausage with a smoky tomato vinaigrette. The bar, with special menus for both Scotch and bourbon, does a brisk after-work and happy hour business with a full range of libations and healthy snacks --- think grilled romaine, and marinated beets with yogurt and curried chicken. Breakfast leans toward the light side in house-made granola or more substantial with pancakes, waffles, french toast and various eggs Benedicts. At brunch, choose from salads, burgers and chicken breast paired with a zesty horseradish aïoli. Red Star also boasts a surprisingly extensive children's menu.
