Perched 162 feet up on a dramatic Dana Point cliff, Restaurant 162’ takes full advantage of one of OC’s best ocean views. If you want to take in this spectacular sight, request a table next to the restaurant’s huge arching windows in this hallway space. For a more intimate feel, sit further back in the main salon, which has a high ceiling holding a turquoise-colored modern art piece. After going through several chef changes, Restaurant 162’ has brought in chef John Garcia (most recently with San Diego’s Hotel del Coronado) to head the kitchen at this upscale breakfast, lunch and dinner venue. Garcia’s dinner menu covers a range of contemporary Euro-Cal styles and influences, as with seared George’s Bank scallops with a smoky-sweet corn and ham risotto. A crisp-skinned filet of kampachi from Kona is tender inside and nicely complemented by warm spinach with bits of chorizo and an intensely-flavored carrot reduction. Save room for pastry chef Jeff Lehuede’s fanciful creations, like the smooth and tart warm lemon gratin. Restaurant 162’ is also known for its seafood buffet on Friday evenings and its champagne brunch on Sundays. Also, don’t miss visiting ENO, the hotel’s wine, cheese and chocolate bar, either before or after your meal, to order up a well-chosen wine flight with a tasting plate of cheese or chocolate---or both. |
