: Hideyo Mitsuno is the artist behind the eclectic French-influenced Japanese menu at this understated little gem in a Sawtelle strip mall. Consider the following appetizers: Japanese tai snapper carpaccio with fried noodles and sesame-soy vinaigrette, roasted Chinese duck egg roll with Mandarin orange sauce, and sautéed sweetbreads with arugula and port wine sauce. Spaghettini comes with calamari or Kobe beef bolognese sauce. A great deal is the prix-fixe lunch, which includes a choice of soup or salad, the special of the day and dessert. Specials include braised salmon with crushed black pepper and Kurobuta pork loin with red skin potatoes and sherry vinaigrette. At dinner, small plates include grilled quail with thyme and duck confit with ravigote sauce. For dessert, save room for French items like flourless chocolate cake, strawberry millefeuille or crêpes Suzette. If none of this makes your palate perk up, check your wrist for a pulse. The wine list constantly evolves; while it is of modest size, it offers some good values. Service can be less than perfect, but still the intent is good. We think you'll share our enthusiasm for this little sleeper. Whether or not you choose to share the secret with others is up to you.
