Restaurant CINQ Restaurant Review: A romantic restaurant in an historic boutique hotel, La Colombe d’Or's Restaurant CINQ offers fine French dining with a Texas twist in the former home of Houston oil baron W. W. Fondren. Lobster bisque topped with lump crab meat is one of the best versions of the dish in Houston, especially with the addition of a dollop of brandy. Alternatively, start with the foie gras torchon with seasonal compote. Then again, Petrossian osetra caviar is almost always available. Lighter entrées include cast iron seared scallops with grapes and wilted leeks, or the traditional Gulf red snapper in vermouth sauce. Meat eaters will go for the 30-day-aged 16-ounce Angus rib-eye and the Colorado rack of lamb with a red wine demi-glace and mint sauce. Ask about the chef’s daily desserts, but don’t pass up a cocktail in the library beforehand, and consider complementing your meal with a bottle from the extensive wine list, which is heavy on French selections and includes the restaurant’s own label from Provence.
