The restaurant is discreet, elegant and stylish, with pale walls, mirrors and modern crystal lighting. The bar has been much improved and enlarged from its previous small space at the front. However, getting a booking here remains one of the hardest tasks in London. But persistence pays off; this is a dining experience you’ll savour. The master himself is rarely there but the kitchen turns out consistently excellent, inventive cooking. Sautéed foie gras comes with roasted veal sweetbreads; scallops arrive with peas, broad beans, quail’s egg, crispy pancetta and lettuce. Mains might include a superb lemon sole with langoustines, caviar, mushroom duxelle and watercress sauce, or three cuts of lamb with spring vegetables. Sourcing is impeccable with most ingredients from around Britain. Desserts stand up as well; save room for the banoffee pie soufflé. The wine list offers rare Burgundies and a collection of Hermitage you’d find difficult to come across in France. All this comes at a price, though the 3-course set lunch for £45 offers one of London’s great treats. À la carte 3-course meal £90; 7-course menu £120.
