With its generously spaced, linen-dressed tables and stylish contemporary chandeliers, Riviera is more high-end restaurant than casual bistro. While you may find a few bistro classics, the menu is rooted in Italian influences. Restaurateur Tomasso Barletta understands his conservative clientele, which seems to have made the place a winner. Standout dishes include starters like a braised short rib over polenta, arancini, and heirloom tomatoes with creamy burrata. There is a lengthy list of pastas and risottos, perhaps bucatini with filet mignon and sweet onions. Entrées are well composed, and feature imported Dover sole filleted tableside and served in a brown butter sauce, as well as classic New York steak grilled and topped with a Cognac-peppercorn sauce. The wine list, with extensive selections from California and Italy, is quite respectable. For dessert, try the house tiramisu.
