Dining room at Robert’s, Paso Robles, CAThis stylish restaurant’s daily menu promises “a fresh approach to classic American cuisine,” and indeed all the dishes get a little twist, such as spinach on a California club sandwich, sea bass encrusted with crab, and an iceberg wedge salad garnished with caramelized onions and chipotle buttermilk dressing. Yes, you can still enjoy traditional preparations of steaks and seafood, but also check out the specials board for game meats like ostrich and rabbit. Desserts include decadent treats such as the playful “Heaven and Hell Cake” with layers of angel food, devil's food and peanut butter mousse. Local wines are celebrated, the list changes frequently, and there are almost-weekly winemaker dinners.
