Rocco’s Italian Grille & Bar Restaurant Review

: If you’re looking for more than a pizza joint, but authentic Italian in a stylish setting, reserve a table at Rocco’s. Rocco is often busy in the dining room helping guests choose a bottle of wine or offering suggestions or tastes from the menu. Start with the fritto misto, a crisp jumble of calamari, shrimp and zucchini, or opt for the bruschetta of the day, which can range from classic tomatoes and basil to creamy white beans with rosemary or jumbo shrimp and blue cheese. Generous fish, chicken and meat dishes vary from grilled prawns to veal scaloppini and marinated, grilled artichokes. Pastas range from classic spaghetti carbonara to rigatoni with a light but rich sausage cream sauce. For $29.95, you can sample a three-course chef’s tasting menu that includes one of three pastas; beef, veal or fish; and a house-made dessert. The small-plates menu in the stylish bar accommodates a light supper---gnocchi, shrimp and a seasonal flatbread are among the selections. At the end of the meal, ask for a dessert sampler for a taste of cannoli, tiramisu and crème caramel. Top off the experience with a tiny glass of fragrant limoncello.

Rocco's Italian Grille very rocky service

This was not good. Ten days before Valentine's Day, when I knew I had to be in Orlando, I invited my wife to come along and booked a dinner reservation after reading all the reviews for a romantic Italian restaurant. I might have suspected things weren't going to go well when I called on the 13th to confirm the reservation, out of caution, and it took literally five minutes for them to find my reservation because whoever took it had badly mispelled my name, Drugend or something like that instead of Burdge (which I always take the time to carefully spell out just to avoid the problem). He promised he would correct the spelling. The next day, we arrived a few minutes early so we could relax in the bar while the table was readied. On arrival, there was no reservation. Well, there was. It was the same problem with name spelling because it had not been corrected after all. Once confirmed, we went to the bar to wait. And we waited. And we waited. And we waited. An hour later, after 3 couples who arrived after us were seated, and hearing their table time confirmed that 2 of them had reservations after our's, we were told for only the second time that it would be another five minutes. Both times, I had to ask how much longer it would be. The wine was excellent, certainly. But I have no idea how the food was because we never got to dinner at all. At 930 we gave up and left. The waiter seemed to deliberately avoid eye contact and said nothing as we walked out the door. I don't know about the food, but even on a holiday that kind of service is worse than poor. I travel a fair amount and have stayed and dined in a variety of places and have learned to be patient. But here? My bet is that if you are a frequent diner or know someone, you'll do just fine here (those 2 late dining couples who were seated while we were still waiting were warmly welcomed back). The service was much faster in Florence and Milan, where I expected delay and would have taken it in stride.
