: Hans and Patti Röckenwagner’s Röck in the Villa Marina Marketplace is a family-friendly restaurant featuring walls hung with bright orange and yellow wedges that you could almost imagine are slices of giant mangoes and papayas, and pebbles are scattered on the tables for the amusement of the under-ten set. We’re not crazy about the huge stark white light balls that hang from the night blue ceiling. Families certainly frequent Röck, if not lured by the colorful décor then perhaps by the generous portions and quite reasonable prices. The seasonally changing menu includes specialties from places as far apart as Germany (Hans Röckenwagner’s home) and the Philippines, but it isn’t Fusion cuisine---apparently this is one kitchen that believes Alsatian bacon and tofu don’t mix. Start with Susy’s pot stickers or Manila clams with drawn butter. Move on to duck confit on roasted root vegetable-mashed potatoes with smoky lentils, or sautéed boneless trout with Moroccan couscous. Desserts include sweet croutons with house-made ice cream and berries or an Amaretto crème brûlée. The sub-compact wine list has a few original offerings, and there’s a fun, friendly bar. Solo diners are welcome; Hans built two long wood-and-recycled-plastic communal tables where customers can mix and mingle, creating their own dining family.
