| Downtown Manhattan Beach has become a year-round playground for the young and moneyed, and many restaurants near the pier have shifted their emphasis from serving fine food to keeping the booze flowing. Michael Zislis' ROCK'N FISH is one of the exceptions, a seafood and steakhouse hot-spot with topnotch service that pays attention to detail. The menu features New Orleans-inspired pastas and Asian-influenced specialties (gumbo, barbecued shrimp, seafood jambalaya), while an oak grill supplies steaks and seafood to diners who prefer simpler plates like a 14-ounce dry-aged rib-eye. The large and ever-changing wine list is fairly priced and strong on small Napa and Sonoma producers, and the by-the-glass list is one of the best in town. Service remains attentive even when the place is booming---and the bar is often buzzing long after the rest of town has shut down. |
