THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Roger's on Fifth Restaurant Review:
Wyatt Earp operated a saloon and gambling hall where one-time San Diego mayor and now leading radio talk show host Roger Hedgecock runs an intimate and rather successful eatery. Housed in the historic, eye-delighting Louis Bank of Commerce Building (an 1880s structure that may be the most striking in the historic Gaslamp Quarter), the restaurant subtitles itself An American Place, and indeed, the entrée list includes meatloaf purportedly made according to Hedgecocks mothers recipe (no disrespect intended, but we found it just about inedible). The walls are painted with likenesses of San Diego civic lights past and present, and those on the right side of the political spectrum sometimes drop by to lift a glass with crony Hedgecock, who is on the premises virtually every night. We think that, the meatloaf aside, chef Michael David Almos does a fine job with the menu, which offers such highlights as a vodka-marinated Maine lobster Martini with cucumber cocktail sauce, pan-seared Colorado lamb rack in a lively red curry-plum sauce, and wildly interesting seared sea scallops with both sun-dried tomato tapenade and Green Goddess dressing. Feta cheese brings a pleasant sharpness to the linguine with lobster and lemony white wine sauce.
