Rooster's Wood-Fired Kitchen Restaurant Review: The chic, bistro-like atmosphere at this cozy uptown hot-spot is worth a discussion, but the inventive menu is what really has people talking. Chef Joe Kindred serves up North African dishes and Vietnamese banh mi among other chalkboard specialties along with traditional European-influenced Southern fare. But the restaurant’s namesake is the star of its menu. Ashley Farms natural, wood-fired chicken, served in half and whole orders, is tender and comforting. We recommend starting with a bowl of tomato basil bisque or the mushroom and Campo de Montalbán (a Spanish cheese from La Mancha) hand-made pizza. Lunch offers a raft of such dishes, plus house-made pasta, sandwiches and salads. Look for Southern flavors on the dessert list, like coconut cake and caramel cake. The gluten-free menu presents a number of choices from the main menu that will pass muster with patrons needing to adhere to that dietary restriction. Don’t miss a look at the extensive wine list, beer and microbrew menu, and cocktail line-up for a pairing. We applaud the inclusion of North Carolina wines, and the array also visits a wide range of wine-producing regions in Europe and the New World.
