A chalkboard with a long list of international sausages hangs above the sizzling grill. A mostly pork-centered list---from spicy to smoked---gets rounded out with smoked duck with hazelnuts, lamb with sun-dried tomato, and chicken with cherries. A not-to-be-missed weisswurst is juicy and tender, plumped with veal scented with onions and leeks. All sausages come on a roll and can be dolled up with a variety of condiments from grilled onions, sweet or hot peppers, quite a few mustards and, of course, sauerkraut. Half-pints of potato salad or some salt-and-vinegar potato chips make for simple side dishes. Don't be put off by the brightly lit storefront with a handful of stools against a narrow counter. Those in the know take their sausages to the Toronado Bar next door where one of the 20 beers on tap is sure to match up with the ideal sausage sandwich. Those really in the know swing by on Tuesdays a bit before 11 a.m. to line up for the weekly hamburger special. Lastly, those who live on the other side of Market can visit Rosamunde's Mission District location at 2832 Mission Street. |
