Roy's Restaurant Review

: Founder and chef Roy Yamaguchi was one of the pioneers of contemporary Hawaiian cuisine and his mini-empire of namesake restaurants has multiplied (this Pasadena branch is one of more than 30 around the globe). You can depend on each location to offer Yamaguchi’s signature dishes, as well as the creations of the local chef. Classic items include wood-grilled Szechuan baby-back pork ribs; blackened island ahi in a spicy-hot, soy-mustard butter sauce (which after all these years continues to be one of the best ahi dishes around); New Zealand rack of lamb; and roasted macadamia island mahi mahi with Maine lobster brandy cream. The hot, dark chocolate soufflé is the finale that is encouraged by staff, but doesn’t quite have the decadence of a traditional soufflé. Yamaguchi pays attention to his wine lists, featuring rare and unusual selections, some produced and bottled exclusively for Roy's. This particular edition of Roy’s is a relatively quiet place to dine, although a happy hour heats up the bar. Overall, it’s a handsome spot where Craftsman style meets the spirit of the Islands. Service is exceptionally warm and efficient.
