Inside time-trippy Allen’s Drug Store---so evocative of the 1950s that one almost feels out of place walking in without bobby socks and a poodle skirt---is another unexpected old-time treat: a branch of the S & S Diner, whose classic fare has drawn diners to an otherwise charmless neighborhood since 1938. As at the original S & S, breakfast food is the highlight of the menu, beginning with bottomless cups of hot, trucker-strong coffee. Proceed to eggs any style accompanied by grits or paprika-dusted home fries and, if desired, an immense variety of proteins: steak, salmon or crab cake, corned beef hash, Georgia or Italian sausage, hamburger, chicken breast, plus an occasional pass at yuppiefied elegance (eggs Benedict). There are also solidly satisfying omelets, waffles, fluffy pancakes, and Old South biscuits and gravy. Among entrées, liver and onions, pork chops, “famous Salisbury steak” and other all-American diner classics are on the menu, along with a palomilla steak and pesto-sauced filet of sole.
