 This charming, shoebox-size restaurant is one of Santa Monica’s best kept secrets. Sam’s seafood, hand-selected at the city’s fresh fish market, predominates on the seasonal menu. Dishes like ahi tartare on shredded frisée with a hint of mint, and grilled escolar with citrus sauce exemplify the kitchen’s affinity for clean Mediterranean flavors and their passion for top quality local ingredients. In addition to fish, the menu features handmade pasta like paper-thin ravioli with ricotta and asparagus filling as well as heartier meat dishes adorned by bouquets of the season’s herbs and vegetables. In keeping with the theme, desserts highlight local fruit. Selections may include strawberry soup with a dollop of dense vanilla ice cream or spiced, poached figs in port wine syrup. The wine list is quite limited but carefully chosen in an attempt to satisfy every preference. As a matter of fact, although the emphasis is on the cuisine, Sam’s finest feature just may be customer service.
