Openings

The Pearl Brewery Farmers' Market has opened on the banks of the San Antonio River adjacent to the Full Goods Warehouse at the Pearl Brewery complex. The official opening in May attracted nearly 6,000 curious shoppers, many in search of products such as grass-fed bison, goat, lamb and beef. All products sold at the market must come from within a 150-mile radius of San Antonio and have been raised by the vendors themselves. Chef demos will take place each week, and a market produce alfresco lunch, prepared by True Flavors Catering’s Johnny Hernandez, is available by reservation at http://www.mesallegre.com/. The market is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 200 E. Grayson St. Go to http://www.pearlfarmersmarket.com/ for more information. Saturday 9-1.

Chef Brian West, whose well-regarded Café Paladar closed earlier this year, has been spotted at Silo 1604, just a short hop down the Loop from his previous establishment. Silo, by the way, is now offering a three-course early-bird dinner menu before 6:30 p.m.; a salad, main dish and dessert goes for $25 or $35, depending on choice of entrée. Silo 1604, 434 N. Loop 1604 W., San Antonio, TX 78232, 210-484-8989.

Closings

L’Etoile, the doyen of French restaurants in San Antonio, has closed its doors after more than 25 years serving upscale cuisine in the posh Alamo Heights neighborhood. Chef and part owner Thierry Burkle says the warning signs were evident early last summer when gasoline prices spiked. Additionally, explained Burkle, an aging (though loyal) audience made it difficult to attract new, younger customers. Burkle and his partner Armand Obadia, plan to concentrate their efforts on The Grill at Leon Springs, a more casual place they launched a couple of years ago. L'Etoile, 6106 Broadway Ave., San Antonio, TX 78209, no phone.
