This intimate SoHo spot is not just a tea-house. In fact, because of---not despite---the variety of 50 different teas available, the kitchen pumps out rich, complex dishes. The kitchen, led by talented one-time Bouley understudy Kevin Stanton, manages to infuse tea into Asian and European-inspired dishes that are increasingly complex with every bite. Bruschetta with heirloom tomatoes on thin whole-wheat bread is elevated with a tangy surreptitious syrup. Flaky halibut, cooked in lychee tea, is wading in a shallow pool of savory saffron sauce. And gnocchi, cooked in brown butter and black tea and then lightly fried, is well paired with pumpkin and cranberries. The extensive cocktail menu consists of creatively-concocted tea libations that are a must. This isn’t your grand mum’s tea-house.
