RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

The team behind decades-old Italian fine dining enclave Acquerello has announced a new, casual project for Polk Street in San Francisco, set to open this spring. Called "1760" for the location's Polk Street address, the restaurant will feature approachable Italian cuisine from executive chef Adam Tortosa (Kiwami, ink.). Gianpaolo Paterlini will craft the international and domestic wine list, and the restaurant will have a full bar and cocktail program. John Wheatman, who led the 2010 update of Acquerello's interior, is directing the design of the new restaurant to include a communal table, bar seating and 60 seats in the dining room. 1760, 1760 Polk St., San Francisco, CA 94109, no phone.

Tax Relief Dinners at Le P'tit Laurent
French bistro Le P'tit Laurent invites diners to take a breather from tax season with a little relief in the form of two-course prix-fixe dinners for $20.13. (The regular à la carte menu will also be served.) Appetizers include soup, salad, marinated salmon or escargots. Mains include sautéed bass with vegetable risotto and grenobloise; tilapia in saffron beurre blanc with mushrooms; six-hour braised lamb shank with green beans and rosemary sauce; or beef bourguignon and mashed potatoes. Dessert? That will cost prix-fixe diners an additional $2.13. The tax relief menu is available Sunday through Thursday nights from March 17-April 15, 2013. Le P'tit Laurent, 699 Chenery St., San Francisco, CA 94131, 415-334-3235.

Checking In On Charles Phan's Many Properties
Slanted Door chef Charles Phan has had his hands full lately. Phan's Heaven's Dog remains closed for renovations after an October 2012 flood, and his once popular branch of Out the Door in the Westfield San Francisco Centre, also flooded last year, has closed to make way for an Asian art retail space. Out the Door on Bush Street and Out the Door at the Ferry Building remain open. Meanwhile, Phan's pending Pier 3 property, a New Orleans-inspired restaurant called Hard Water, formerly set to open in December 2012, will now not open until mid March 2013. His all-day café and bar inside the new SFJAZZ performance center, however --- also inspired by New Orleans flavors, and featuring bar bites and cocktails --- is on track to open March 5, 2013, at 201 Franklin Street at Fell Street, San Francisco.

Chef Shuffle

Peter McNee has departed Poggio restaurant in Sausalito, and former senior sous chef Benjamin Balesteri has been promoted to executive chef. Along with a combined three years at Poggio, Balesteri's résumé includes St. Helena's Tra Vigne and Lincoln in New York, where he was opening sous to Jonathan Benno. He is originally from the Salinas Valley, his heritage is Sicilian, and he also staged in Tuscan restaurants. Poggio, 777 Bridgeway, Sausalito, CA 94965, 415-332-7771.

Closings

Opened in 1983 by Auberge du Soleil's chef Masataka ("Masa") Kobayashi, Masa's reputation persevered for three decades as among the most formidable in San Francisco, with a lifetime roster of chefs that includes Richard Reddington, Ron Siegel and Julian Serrano. Its final stage under chef Gregory Short beginning in 2004 saw continued prestige, even as other fine dining standouts succumbed to the changing economy. Though still among the top, the restaurant will close this month to make way for a more casual enclave, and sources say Short will shift from restaurant to corporate chefhood. According to reception, Masa's final evening of service will be February 16, 2013. We will miss the handsome dining room, expert service and consistent excellence. Masa's, Executive Hotel Vintage Court, 648 Bush St., San Francisco, CA 94108, 415-989-7154.
