RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

Buzzworthy newcomer Rotisserie & Wine has opened in Napa from celeb chef-owner Tyler Florence (Wayfare Tavern). (Former creative director and partner and chef Jeremy Fox, previously of Ubuntu, departed shortly after opening.) The December 2010 opening marked the end of a big year for Florence, whose first restaurant Wayfare Tavern in San Francisco opened in June and popular cookbook Family Meal was released in the fall. Florence's Southern roots are evinced in Rotisserie & Wine's classic American "meat and three" dishes---rotisserie-cooked sustainable meats such as Petaluma chicken, porchetta and Marin goat paired with locally sourced vegetables turned out Southern style (twice baked yams, braised Yountville collards). The wine list of the restaurant's title is intimate at 100 bottles, including many from Florence's own label. The warm, casual, rustically styled space along the Napa River seats 70 inside and 50 on an outdoor patio. Dinner nightly. Rotisserie & Wine, 720 Main St., Napa, CA 94559, 707-254-8500.

Breakfast Dogs
Show Dogs, GAYOT.com's 2011 Annual Restaurant Issue's Cheap Eats pick for San Francisco, now serves weekday breakfast. The seven new morning dishes from chef-owners Gayle Pirie and John Clark (Foreign Cinema) showcase the same high-quality ingredients and creativity as the eatery's lunch and dinner items. They include huevos rancheros, croque madame with pulled pork, steak and eggs with roasted jalapeño and the "sunrise showdog," featuring maple bacon sausage, piperade, cheddar, arugula and egg served with celery root hash browns. Breakfast is served from 8 a.m.-11 a.m., Monday-Friday. Show Dogs, 1020 Market St., San Francisco, CA 94102, 415-558-9560.

The Grand Café On-the-Go Lunch
The Grand Café now offers a quick, budget-friendly option for lunch Monday through Friday in Union Square. Called the "lunch rapide," it features a choice among three entrées---seasonal ravioli, cheeseburger or free-range chicken breast sandwich---paired with seasonal soup, salad or french fries followed by macaroons for $16. (Heartier plats du jour are available with the same options for $20.) The experience is meant to be so rapide that the macaroons are offered to go. Grand Café, Hotel Monaco, 501 Geary St., San Francisco, CA 94102, 415-292-0101.

Chef Shuffle

Justin Cogley is the new chef de cuisine at Aubergine restaurant within L'Auberge Carmel, replacing executive chef Christophe Grosjean. Cogley comes to the Pacific coast from Chicago, where he was chef de cuisine at Charlie Trotter's restaurant for two years and executive sous for the opening of the Elysian hotel. Aubergine, L'Auberge Carmel, Seventh Ave. & Monte Verde St., Carmel, CA 93923, 831-624-8578.

Dio Deka in Los Gatos has named Marty Cattaneo executive chef. Cattaneo's experience through Bay Area kitchens includes two years as sous for David Kinch at Manresa (also in Los Gatos); chef de cuisine of Ubuntu in Napa under Jeremy Fox; and most recently sous chef work for Mourad Lahlou of Aziza in San Francisco on "Iron Chef America." Cattaneo plans to highlight local ingredients in the restaurant's seasonal Greek cuisine. Dio Deka, Hotel Los Gatos & Spa, 210 E. Main St., Los Gatos, CA 95030, 408-354-7700.

Oliveto has a new chef, Jonah Rhodehamel, who has replaced Paul Canales. Rhodehamel has held sous positions at La Folie, the former Zinnia, Americano and was a tournant at Quince (chef Michael Tusk is also an Oliveto alum). His menu will renew Oliveto's focus on traditional Italian cuisine. Oliveto, Rockridge Market Hall, 5655 College Ave., Oakland, CA 94618, 510-547-5356.

Closings

Notable Berkeley counter Amanda's Feel Good Fresh Food has closed. The experiment in healthful fast food---freshly made sodas, baked fries and naturally raised burgers (saving customers, according to the venue, 10,000 pounds worth of calories)---couldn't come to an agreement with its downtown Berkeley landlords and hopes to find a future location.
