Sapporo Restaurant Review: Sapporo surprises New York diners on two levels. First, the restaurant is lodged on 49th Street just a few steps from Times Square, and it’s situated so discretely that it’s easily overlooked. Second, despite its tourist trap location, Sapporo serves up above-average ramen in a very non-flashy front room. Blond wood tables and few design flourishes make up the space, leaving the emphasis on the huge bowls of nourishing ramen. And there are many types to choose from, including a shrimp-laced version and one with flavorful sesame sauce. One of the best and most surprising, however, is the cold ramen soup, served with ham, eggs, fishcakes and corn. Complement it all with---appropriately enough---a large bottle of Sapporo beer.
