One of the reasons for this spot’s success is the friendly, family-style ambience from general manager Saul Cruz’ and his down-to-earth team. Quick with a smile, servers and managers are knowledgeable and eager to please. There’s a high energy bar scene, especially for the live jazz on weekends. The main salon features large banquettes, with intimate tables next to the fireplace in an adjacent cozy room. The menu hasn’t changed much with its well-portioned comfort food with a California twist. A grilled Caesar salad is smoky and wilted, drizzled with tangy dressing. For the entrées, the cooking is straightforward and often humble, as in the case of the braised boneless short ribs, roasted halibut in a classic lemon and caper sauce and a rosemary-roasted rack of lamb. Five types of steaks come with the choice of three sauces: béarnaise, peppercorn or melting Maytag blue cheese butter. The 16-ounce marinated rib-eye comes with Creole-spiced jumbo shrimp. Desserts are decadent.
