Scarpetta Restaurant Review: Chef Scott Conant has brought his proven Scarpetta brand to the Thompson Toronto hotel. The name, which translates as "little shoe," actually refers to the act of mopping up the remnants of pasta sauce with a piece of bread, an action that's generally acceptable in casual restaurants in Italy. But salt-of-the-earth eatery this is not. Instead, Scarpetta is an homage to haute rustic Italian fare. Scarpetta’s contemporary décor features S-shaped booths, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a patio with a spacious communal table and views of Victoria Memorial Park. Standout dishes include creamy polenta with fricassée of truffled mushrooms, yellowtail with ginger oil and sea salt, and seared diver scallops. WARNING: the bread basket includes warm bread stuffed with salami, smoked mozzarella, basil and garlic that is absolutely addictive. But save room for the tomato/basil spaghetti or the short ribs agnolotti. Hungry or not, let the Amadei (arguably the finest maker of cacao) chocolate cake seal a memorable meal.
