Schemmy’s Restaurant, located in an historic 1858 building, has been a popular local spot for 20 years, primarily as an ice cream parlor. For 40 years prior, it operated as an apothecary. Old diplomas, photos, medicine jars and original oak cabinets remain to tell the story of this family-owned place. It’s casual with an old-time feel, but the huge menu is contemporary. Schemmy’s serves copious quantities of good, well-cooked basic food, notably their breakfast specialties, such as a light French pastry puff, stuffed with scrambled eggs, Monterey Jack cheese and bacon, which will get you on your way for the day. The freshly squeezed juices (100 percent juice), including watermelon, celery or carrot, will add a healthy touch. This is definitely a kid-friendly spot. They devour pizzas with lots of toppings, huge sundaes and banana boats like the Titanic---a whole banana, four scoops of ice cream, three kinds of toppings and whipped cream. For adults, Schemmy’s has added a full bar, Hudson Valley wines, candlelight and more upscale dining, along with entertainment and wine tastings. Drop in for an inexpensive glass of wine. We liked the South African selections.
