Openings

The former site of Veil in lower Queen Ann is now Laredos, a Mexican restaurant featuring cuisine from Southern Texas and Northern Mexico. The 92-seat restaurant and bar features antique fixtures and art from Laredo, Texas, not to mention items from the original King County Jail. The sleek minimal space has also been spiced up with a live-fire mesquite Aztec grill and an upright rotisserie for house specialties such as classic tacos al pastor and tacos al carbon. All dishes are prepared from scratch, including fresh to-order corn and flour tortillas. Small plates range from $4.50 to $8.95, while entrées from $9 to $14. Dinner daily. Chefs Brian McCracken and Dana Tough, the duo behind Spur gastropub in Belltown, and their barman, David Nelson, have opened Tavern Law, a 21-and-over restaurant and speakeasy-styled bar in Capitol Hill. Nelson is showcasing handmade classic cocktails using freshly squeezed juices and housemade syrups and tinctures. Already popular, this elegant high-energy restaurant features seasonal rotations of classics such as oysters Rockefeller, a slow-cooked pork Monte Cristo, Clams Casino, and fried potato dumplings. Chef/restaurateur John Howie, the chef-owner of Seastar restaurants in Bellevue and Seattle, has launched a new signature restaurant---John Howie Steak---in Bellevue’s tony new complex, The Shops at The Bravern. Executive Chef Mark Hipkiss, formerly of the Metropolitan Grill, is in charge of the kitchen. Look for an extensive wine list and both mesquite charcoal and apple wood grills to showcase another signature Howie menu. Lunch Mon.-Fri., Dinner daily. Chef Shuffle

Cascina Spinasse's founding chef Justin Neidermeyer, acclaimed for bringing authentic Piedmontese dishes to Seattle, has passed his pasta baton to chef de cuisine Jason Stratton. Neidermeyer, who opened his brilliant Capitol Hill restaurant in 2008, may be returning to Italy but is still involved at Spinasse. The small Italian gem is open for dinner daily.
