SUR, a new restaurant and club in Seattle's SODO (South of Downtown) district, combines fine dining with flavors influenced by Latin cultures. Executive chef Maritza Texeira and her culinary team offer a changing menu of Latin-inspired dishes. SUR's hybrid dining room/club setting also offers scheduled performances, such as salsa, samba or tango dancing. SUR is located at 2901 First Ave. South, Seattle. Cantinetta, the small but exceptional restaurant in Wallingford serving Northern Italian cuisine, has opened a new location in Bellevue at 10038 Old Main Street with a similar menu and equally charming ambiance. Open nightly for dinner, and owned by Trevor Greenwood, the restaurant's kitchen is being guided by chef Tomer Shneor, who recently worked at Felidia Ristorante (Lidia Bastianich's Italian restaurant  in NYC) and at Daniel Boulud's restaurants. Ethan Stowell's much anticipated Staple & Fancy Mercantile in Ballard is expected to open by mid-August, a bit behind schedule. Stowell, who also owns Tavolata, How to Cook a Wolf, and Anchovies & Olives, recently closed Union restaurant in downtown Seattle. Staple & Fancy Mercantile will serve dinner seven nights a week, with a four-course chef's dinner for $45, as well as a limited a la carte menu.

Tasty Book Spotlights Seattle Dining, Past & Present
Just re-published! Dining In Seattle: Past and Present showcases more than 200 recipes from legendary restaurants that are no longer open, as well as current Seattle favorites. Authored by Andrea Lott, Andrea Umbach, and Elliott Wolf, this is the updated volume of a book first printed in 1977. The 300-page book also provides palate-pleasing memories and tasty tidbits from the city's dining establishments. It is available through Amazon.com, at major bookstores, or directly from www.diningincookbooks.com. The black-and-white photo illustrated paperback is priced at $23.
 

Chef Shuffle

The main dining room at The Herbfarm One of the country's top dessert wizards, Cory Barrett, has joined The Herbfarm as pastry chef. Barrett comes to The Herbfarm from Cleveland, where he created desserts at acclaimed "Iron Chef" winner Michael Symon's restaurant Lola, plus Symon's four other Cleveland-area restaurants. Barrett also backed chef Symon as his sous chef on many of the "Iron Chef" TV food battles. He is renowned among pastry chefs for his creativity and rule-breaking creations. Sostanza, the elegant Italian restaurant in Madison Park, suddenly closed its doors last month after 15 years of operation. It had been for sale for several years; no word yet on whether there is a new owner and his/her plans. Sostanza, Key Bank Building, 10655 NE Fourth St., Bellevue, WA 98004, no phone.
