Openings

Renée Erickson, owner of Boat Street Café and The Walrus and The Carpenter, plans to open her third restaurant, The Whale Wins, with partners Jeremy Price and Chad Dale, the team behind Ballard's acclaimed The Walrus and the Carpenter. Timing calls for a fall opening in the new Fremont Collective development, a converted warehouse space at 3506 Stone Way North. The vegetable-focused menu prepared over wood fires will be inspired by the cuisine of southern Europe and northern Africa. The Whale Wins, 3506 Stone Way North, Seattle, WA 98103, no phone.

The new food truck Lucky Devil Doughnuts Co. is serving up gourmet doughnuts like The Hawaiian Host (chocolate glazed with macadamia nuts and salt caramel drizzle), Marie Antoinette (custard-filled doughnut topped with powdered sugar, dressed with cotton candy and garnished in gold) and The Lucky Devil (chocolate cake doughnut with ghost chili chocolate glaze and cherry icing drizzle). There's also the Surfers Breakfast, a sandwich of eggs and Spam between two doughnuts.

Hot Cakes has opened in Ballard, serving up molten chocolate cakes in mason jars. Flavors include s'mores and Dark Decadence, which is made with 70% dark chocolate. Hot Cakes, 5427 Ballard Ave., Seattle, WA 98107, 206-420-3431.
