RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

Two more restaurants have opened in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood, home to Amazon's campus with its hip, hungry employees. La Toscanella Bakery & Paninoteca --- located at 116 Westlake Avenue North (between John Street and Denny Way), offers baked goods and sandwiches with Italian heritage. Nearby, the Veggie Grill recently opened at 446 Terry Avenue. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., the Veggie Grill serves what it describes as "vegan comfort food." The restaurant group plans to open a second location soon in University Village.

Rione XIII has opened in Seattle (Photo by Geoffrey Smith) Ethan Stowell has added a new restaurant to his culinary empire with the opening of Rione XIII on Capitol Hill. Featuring a charming brick interior and open kitchen, the restaurant was inspired by Trastevere, Rome's bustling 13th district. The menu will focus on simple Italian cooking enjoyed in its capital city such as fried artichokes, housemade mozzarella, pasta, and wood-fired Roman-style street pizzas. Open daily for dinner, and serving lunch Monday through Friday, the kitchen will be manned by chef Brandon Kirksey. Stowell's other Seattle neighborhood restaurants include Anchovies & Olives, How to Cook a Wolf, Tavolata, and Staple & Fancy Mercantile. Dinner daily, Lunch Mon.-Fri. Rione XIII, 401 15th Ave. E, Seattle, WA 98112, 206-838-2878.

The historic Marquee Hotel, established in 1918 in lower Queen Anne, recently opened a full-service restaurant offering breakfast, lunch and dinner for guests and neighbors. Just a few blocks from Seattle Center, the Tin Lizzie Lounge is named for its pressed tin ceiling that complements the early 20th-century flavor of the antique marble bar, dark wood accents and charming décor. Breakfast begins at 6:30 a.m. Tin Lizzie Lounge, Marqueen Hotel, 600 Queen Anne Ave. N., Seattle, WA 98109, 206-282-7407.

Belltown's restaurant explosion continues with the opening of Rocco's for pizza and the Fumaca Brazilian Steakhouse. Rocco's, located at Second and Bell in the former Dope Burger space (previously Noodle Ranch), sells pizza by the slice for $3 or whole pies for around $20. The new venture is owned by Jesus Escobar, who is also the proprietor of Belltown's Stylus Salon and Noc Noc in downtown Seattle. Rocco's is open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A few blocks away, Fumaca Brazilian Steakhouse has opened at 101 Denny Way in the triangular building formerly occupied by Minnie's and an earlier string of unlucky restaurant attempts. Open for lunch and dinner, Fumaca is operated by former employees of the now defunct, yet popular Ipanema Brazilian Grill in downtown Seattle. The menu includes authentic cuisine from Colombia, Peru, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and of course, a good helping of Brazilian barbecue.
