Selamat Pagi Restaurant Review

: If you’ve had the opportunity to try Balinese cuisine, it probably included exorbitant resort fees, nightly turn down service and an airplane ticket to the Indonesian coast. Bali, otherwise known as a vacationer’s mecca, has a tropical take on Indonesian cooking that’s all its own, and it has arrived in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Conceived by Peter and Ben Van Leeuwen and Laura O’Neill of Van Leeuwen ice cream truck fame, the bright white-washed and freshly scrubbed wooden interior is minimalist and casual. Best described as an Indonesian and Malaysian hybrid with island accents, the menu is characterized by strong flavors and plenty of heat, although there are non-spicy dishes, too. Nasi goreng, traditional Balinese fried rice, prawn crackers and cucumbers topped with sunnyside-up organic egg, is classic home-style fare; it melds with sweet soy bean sauce to hearty effect. Meanwhile, crispy mahi mahi, bathed in coconut curry, turmeric, lemon grass, galangal, Thai eggplant, sweet potato, tamarind, rice, cucumbers and peanuts, is mild and flaky with just enough sauce to enhance but not overpower the fish. French wines, along with Italian, German and Spanish varietals, dominate the wine list. A bottle of 2011 Château la Rame Bordeaux Blanc will tone down the spice and balance nicely with the tropical tastes. Otherwise, the 2011 Domaine de Montbourgeau, Poulsard AOC from the Côtes du Jura will work well with meat selections and add fruity overtones to the meal.
