The industrial-style renovated space in the Studioplex in Atlanta’s funky Old Fourth Ward district once was a cotton storehouse built in the early twentieth century. With Dawn and Scott Serpas’ input, Atlanta’s May Architecture + Interiors crafted a contemporary, patron-friendly space that invites lingering. Serpas, formerly the head toque with Concentrics Restaurants and a native of New Orleans, brings a taste of that city’s traditional cuisine to his menu, with such flavors as beignets at brunch and a Sazerac among the cocktails. Though the eggplant “hushpuppies” are attention-getting we find their mushy texture off-putting. Not so with the crab-slathered Texas toast with chipotle aïoli, a nifty appetizer that could easily make a light supper dish with a salad. Which brings us to the Serpas house salad, a glorious arrangement, dotted with candied pecans and goat cheese, and dressed with a tasty vinaigrette. For mains, target the boneless beef short rib served with a celery root potato gratin that could easily be a main dish for vegetarians. And for dessert, do not miss the fried pies. The wine list offers a few good choices by the glass and bottle, with prices at and under $35 a bottle. The reserve list hits the $70 mark.
