| Chef Kamila Abdul Nabi cooks as she would for her family, and the dishes are compelling. Our favorites include the dumplings, plump ravioli-like pillows filled with leeks and spinach, under a yogurt and mint sauce. We also recommend the pakawra, large slices of fried potato; and bowlani kadu, dough bundles filled with pumpkin and other vegetables, warmed by a suggestion of cayenne pepper and again bathed in a yogurt sauce. Pumpkin, offered as a sweet purée or as a side dish, makes a good partner with this food, and eggplant topped with yogurt sauce may be a side dish or vegetarian main. Lamb or beef shami kebabs are cooked to a dry state, so be forewarned. Sautéed lamb in tomato and herbs is a tastier dish, as is the chicken tandoori. For dessert, try ferni, a milk pudding with fresh fruit, perfumed with cardamom and rosewater, and getting a boost in flavor and texture from crushed pistachios. The wine list has been thoughtfully composed for both appropriateness and value. But hot or cold tea infused with cardamom pairs well with this food. |
